Gladys Wylie Toney, 93, of Chester passed away March 2, 2024.
Born in Clyde, Texas to James “Jim” W. Wylie and Edna Netherlin Wylie, she returned home with her family to Chester, Texas where she grew up and graduated high school. Gladys worked briefly for the phone company before marrying W. Edward Toney. Shortly after the birth of their first child, she and her new family moved to Orange, Texas for work. For the time they lived in Orange, they made regular visits home keeping connected to family and friends. During this time, she became a member of the Eastern Star in Orange.
After 20 years, she, Edward, and their youngest daughter, Elizabeth returned home to Chester. She was a long-time member of Enon Baptist Church in Chester. This is where she remained becoming the 3rd generation in her family to call Chester home.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Edna Wylie; husband, W. Edward Toney; brothers, James Wylie and Calvin Wylie; sisters, Edna Beason and Vivian Cogbill and a cousin who she grew up with, Cleveland Dominy.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Landry (Floyd) of Orangefield and Elizabeth Toney (Cody Fowler) of Lufkin; only grandchild, Joshua Toney (Natasha) and great-grandchildren, Brandon and Lilah Toney all of Lufkin; nieces, nephews, other family members, friends and those who helped the family to look after her.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11 am at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Larry Trest officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Chester, Texas. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 9 am until 11 am at the funeral home.
